The Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology
The Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology was established in 2005 with a mission to be at the forefront of stem cell biology research. The goal is to conduct high caliber stem cell research that can ultimately lead to medical advances. We have over 40 faculty members, all of whom work on a variety of areas within stem cell biology. Members are affiliated with more than 20 different departments and institutions at the NYU Langone Medical Center, representative of the multidisciplinary nature of the center. The Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology faculty are internationally renowned and have received many honors and awards. Faculty include members of the National Academy of Sciences and Howard Hughes Medical Investigators.
Research at the center is focused on four broad areas, including (1) programming and reprogramming, lineage restriction and development, (2) tissue stem cells and disease, (3) regeneration and homeostasis, and (4) cancer and stem cells. Scientists within the center focus on one or more of the research areas and conduct their studies on a variety of tissue/organ systems ranging from embryonic stem cells to brain, heart, bone, lung and many more tissue systems in between.
The Stem Cell Biology training program in The Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences is designed to promote interdisciplinary studies within the field of stem cell biology for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. We provide a great environment for trainees to explore the vast field of stem cell biology research. In addition to having a choice of mentors that range in their disciplines within stem cell biology, trainees are offered a seminar series, stem cell biology course, and stem cell biology tutorials, aimed at providing trainees with a breadth of knowledge in the field of stem cell biology. Our location in New York City also provides the opportunity for attendance at many local conferences and seminars within a short radius of the school.
The mission of the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology is to establish a world-class, multidisciplinary research center focusing on the basic biology of stem cells in a variety of species and cell types. Every day we are making strides towards achieving this goal!
